Functional, sleek and clean, minimalism takes away all the bells and whistles from your home’s décor, leaving just what you need to live a comfortable life. However, for a lot of people, a minimalist design ends up being too dry and frankly, too boring.

Yet, contrary to popular belief, minimalism in interior design is not meant to mimic a sterile, blank environment!

In fact, minimalism blends comfort and functionality. So you’re not supposed to stick to just a monochrome design palette. Even with splashes of color and touches of comfort and love, you can still have a minimalist home that’s not just well-designed and functional, but homey.

Tips on Turning a Minimalist House into a Home

Play with Textures

Play with Textures

Having everything one-tone will only make your room look flat. Adding different shapes, material and color is the best way to give your home some character.

For example, if you have a one-color couch, a center table and a television on the wall, add some elements to create a flow about the room, like throw pillows, maybe a fleece throw blanket to break the monotony, and a small vase on the table, maybe a geometric print on the wall.

There’s no reason to bombard the space with colors and items. Just color-coordinate the palette and you should be good to go!

Simple Color Palettes are the Key

Love a good splash of blue with those white basic walls? Go for it, but remember to stick to that color for an accent wall only, with the same color pops around the room. Minimalist homes are meant to have a muted palette so remember to not go overboard with the theme.

Add Some Natural Wood to the Mix

Wall Texture

Natural wood floors or maybe some kitchen cabinets with faux marble countertops to spice things up, would go over very well. Natural wood is very inviting and can add a wonderful cozy character to the room.

If possible, try to go for a natural theme, with some mossy greens here and there with pops of red to really tie the whole room together.

Let the Sunshine in

Even the best light bulbs cannot make up for the sunshine you’ll get from those large, open windows. Aside from giving you that much-needed vitamin D, larger windows help you save on energy costs as well, since you don’t need to turn the light on that often.

Add a few soft fluorescent light bulbs here and there for reading, so your eyes don’t get strained. But for the rest of the day, open up those windows.

Don’t have them? If possible, have them built. Think of this home renovation as an investment.
